Three other cities in the UAE were named in the the top ten: Ajman (fourth), Dubai (fifth) and Ras al-Khaimah (sixth).

Other GCC cities rank well, too, with Doha in Qatar coming in third place this year.

Second place went to Taipei, while the rest of the top ten was rounded out with Muscat in Oman (seventh), The Hague in the Netherlands (eighth), Bern in Switzerland (ninth) and Munich in Germany (tenth).

Survey participants are asked questions to determine whether they felt their city was the safest city in the world. Questions were on the lines of how safe they feel walking at night, how worried they are about being robbed, and about the change in crime levels over the past three years.

In Abu Dhabi, the perception of how safe it is to walk at night is very high, while the fear of having a car stolen, being attacked, or worries about vandalism are all very low.

On the opposite end of the scale, Caracas in Venezuela has the highest crime rating, followed by Pretoria and Durban in South Africa.
