Woman Walks Ahead

A western starring Jessica Chestain

A welcome, female-led western in the tradition of Meek’s Cutoff and The Homesman, Woman Walks Ahead leaves a rather dry aftertaste – its inspection of the violent American chapter on the brink of the Wounded Knee massacre feels slightly naive. But the resolute Michael Greyeyes and the always-brilliant Jessica Chastain chart their respective characters with real chemistry, and Susanna White captures the pair’s brewing romantic tension. For underscoring the brief but beautiful optimism of two ill-fated outliers, her woman comes out ahead. Character-driven and smart in all the right places, it’s an intriguing watch. Tomris Laffly
