It’s the ultimate party night of the year. Below we list all the best events, gigs and dinners on December 31. Time to get planning.
Al Maryah Island
One of the city’s top entertainment destinations will be lighting up with New Year celebrations. There are musical acts and fantastic fireworks taking over Al Maryah Island at The Capital Celebrates. This year, the six-hour event will be held on the picturesque promenade, headlined by Arabian stars Balgees and Kadim Al Sahir.
Sahir, known as the Caesar of Arabian music and the lead coach of the Arabian version of international TV smash hit, The Voice, is sure to get the thumbs up from an expected crowd of more than 14,000 New Year’s Eve revellers.
One of the Middle East’s most acclaimed artists, Sahir has sold more than 100 million records during a hit-laden career spanning three decades.
Emirati-Yemeni superstar Balquees will kick off the festivities with a hotly-anticipating live performance showcasing her greatest hits, including tracks from her record-breaking debut album, Majnoun, which scored more than 30 million views on YouTube and her follow-up release, Zai Ma Ana, which became the highest selling and most downloaded album on iTunes in the Middle East.
The massive event is free and with entry on a first-come, first-served basis, fans are urged to arrive early to get the best view of the action.
Even if you don’t get right at the front, you won’t miss a minute of the action as the concert will be beamed on large screens on the water.
Once the last song has been played, eyes will turn to the skies for a striking firework display as 2018 is ushered in with a bang.
Free. Doors open at 7pm, concerts start at 10pm, fireworks at midnight. Doors close at 1am. Sunday December 31, 2017. www.almaryahisland.ae.
There will be an extra special ‘firework’ in Abu Dhabi this New Year’s Eve – as chart-topping mega star Katy Perry will be hosting a massive end-of-year family-friendly concert.
The American pop icon, who has racked up millions of record sales all over the world during a stellar decade-long career, will be wowing the crowds at du Arena in Yas Island in the final hours of 2017.
It’s ‘Perry’ good news for the legions of fans of the ever-popular performer, who has been one of the biggest names on the music scene since her breakthrough album, One of the Boys, in 2008. Perry topped the Billboard Top 200 with her fourth studio album, Witness, and then raced into the record books after lead single, Chained to the Rhythm, earned the most Spotify streams by any female artist – with the number now well above one million and counting.
Rock giants Coldplay took the city by storm for last year’s New Year’s Eve gig and now fans will be able to party along to another mega star to mark the close of another fantastic year on Yas Island. We just can’t wait to hear Katy Perry ‘roar’ in the capital.
