Why you should check out the library in Abu Dhabi's presidential palace

You’ve probably heard by now that Qasr Al Watan, Abu Dhabi’s presidential palace, has opened to the public.
Decorated with gold, marble, stained-glass windows and delicate furnishings, the extravagant building is so beautiful it takes your breath away.

It’s a bit fancy to say the least, and we don’t mind admitting we’ve been pretty obsessed with this incredible place since we were first given a glimpse inside.

But it’s far more than just an amazing piece of architecture.

Located in the centre of the palace, Qasr Al Watan Library has also just unlocked its doors for our perusing pleasure, and it sounds like the best place on Earth for all book lovers, or anyone interested in finding out more about this fascinating country we call home.

The collection contains more than 50,000 books, covering a huge range of subjects such as archaeology, history, social sciences, statistics, technology and art.

But the row after row of intriguing works is just the beginning, and there are plans to expand the library to include interactive exhibitions, and sections on the publishing and multimedia industries within the UAE.

The wonderful institution also holds great historical significance, housing some of the UAE’s legislative material and important historical documents.

Everyone is invited to come and have a look around, and the resources are provided in Arabic, English and a number of other languages.

It’s not all about old-fashioned books either. Those of you who prefer to absorb information in more modern formats will particularly enjoy the e-books, audio, visual, and multimedia content on offer.

There are also countless dissertations, research articles, newspapers, magazines, notes, reports, encyclopaedias, databases and rare manuscripts to flick through.

With comfortable furnishings and computers to help you find what you’re looking for, everything about this peaceful institution invites you to settle down and spend many a happy hour reading and researching.

While the library is open daily from 10am to 8pm, becoming a member gets you access to even more exciting features.
Members can borrow copied material and also browse the digital library from anywhere in Abu Dhabi.

It’s something different to peruse over your morning cup of coffee, anyway.

You can become a member by visiting here, and guided tours are available to all visitors.

We can already see this becoming one of our favourite places to spend a quiet afternoon, our heads buried in many literary works of art.
Daily 10am-8pm. Qatr Al Watan, Presidential Palace Al Ras Al Akhdar (600 544 442).
