Many people seem to think that visiting an art gallery always involves wandering through room after room of framed paintings.

But an exhibition coming to the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery next spring is offering a totally different kind of experience. Even if you’re not normally ‘an art gallery kind of person’, this display will leave you totally amazed.

Swiss artist Zimoun is known for producing thought-provoking sound sculptures and audio-visual art installations.

Abu Dhabi residents will soon be able to view five of his most fascinating projects right here in the capital, in an event which marks the first time that the self-taught artist has exhibited in the UAE.

His extraordinary displays are created by connecting analogue motors to various household objects such as wooden sticks, cardboard boxes and tin foil. All the sounds in the installations then come from the movement of these simple items.

Based in the Swiss capital of Bern, Zimoun says that he likes to refer to his projects as ‘primitive complexities’.

He says: “I explore simple systems which involve various complexities in sound and motion. Through primitive mechanical systems, I look to activate simple and raw materials which then start to develop a complex behaviour.”

The features focus on the idea that chaos can be created from underlying systems of order. Each part explores elements of biology, engineering, music and sound. Walking in to the installations is described as being like entering an urban landscape that’s completed by realistic sounds of rain, sandstorms or wind.

The most extraordinary feature looks to be a room-sized piece that’s made from 658 DC motors, cotton balls and cardboard boxes.

Meanwhile, another key part of the exhibition is a record label project entitled Leerraum, which means ‘empty space’ in English.

Featuring 100 works from 50 international artists and designers, the experimental music project has been produced using CDs, DVDs and print methods.

You can check out the fascinating displays from February 26 to June 1.
Free. Feb 26-Jun 1. Open Mon-Sat noon-8pm. NYU Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island (02 628 8000).
