Time Out Says
Nestled on the rooftop of the downtown hotel, it’s one of the coolest bars on Hamdan Street.
Above all the noise of honking horns and busy pavements, and looking up at those impressive World Trade Center towers, it’s a great spot to unwind for a quiet drink, but it’s equally somewhere for a big night out, with regular events including comedy shows.
The venue itself is a little eclectic, part of the walls have the same wooden cladding that covers the mall, and then there are the two giant wooden tree sculptures in the middle of the room. Is it a little odd? Yes, but with a chilled vibe and brilliant staff, it’s incredibly charming too.
Our latest visit takes place midweek, when the bar has a scattering of other customers. Some are guests at the hotel, and others, like ourselves, have stopped by after work on the way back home.
There’s also a pool bar on the same level if you want to sit outside and unwind, but we choose a spot indoors.
With sofas, tables and bar stools to choose from, we take up residence in the corner, at some comfortable low-level seating.
There are drinks at reasonable prices, so we enjoy a glass or two of hops and peruse the food menu, which charts a similarly eclectic path as the venue.
All the usual bar food suspects are there, from chicken wings and sliders to nachos and fries, but there’s also a bunch of dishes leaning towards Caribbean and Jamaican flavours.
We can recommend the “Caribbean-style nachos” to go with your drinks, though the toppings don’t seem too dissimilar to the regular Mexican version.
There’s a lot to love about this bar. The vibe is relaxed, the staff are incredibly helpful and the views are great. And, where else can you chill out beneath a giant tree indoors? You just need a taxi driver who knows the way.
