Trader Vic's

Review: An old favourite that might not be trendy but still delivers the goods

Time Out Says

We love to try out the coolest, shiniest and trendiest new bars here in Abu Dhabi (it is part of the job description after all). But that doesn’t mean it has to be “out with the old and in with the new”, we still keep an eye on our old haunts as well.

Trader Vic’s has been part of the capital nightlife scene for well over twenty years, but familiarity only breeds contentment, for us.

The well-established venue, based in the Beach Rotana, catches the eye with its nautical theme, including a hollowed-out canoe hanging from the ceiling.

While that could sound a little kitsch, the décor, allied to the low-key lighting, really works.

Be warned, a night here can be a bit of a slow burner. But that suits us just fine.

The casual vibe is replaced by a more lively atmosphere as the clock ticks towards the end of the night, with live bands a regular feature and the rythm of Latino sounds providing the soundtrack to a night out. It is very easy for a quick outing to extend into a full evening out.

Time does fly when you are having fun – and that is something that this venue trades in.

If you are after a bite, there is plenty to savour in the Polynesian island cuisine, blending tastes with French, Chinese and Creole influences. And it all goes with the beverages very nicely.

The tropical atmosphere of this island escape also extends to the rich array of mixed drinks on offer, which are presented with a sense of fun and no little flair.

With the Beach Rotana having a healthy roster of restaurants, Trader Vic’s is great for a stop-off before or after a meal.

But be careful, or you might end up missing that dinner reservation altogether.

The bottom line

One of the most fun hangouts in the city.
