Time Out Says

You just don’t really get American-style sports bars back in the UK and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

We Brits love a good old pub, the older the better, one with a long list of regulars, battered carpets and a slightly disturbing (yet familiar) aroma of many good nights still lingering in the air.

We all have our favourites and since no one likes an imitation it’s best that these weathered establishments remain back in the UK where we know they’re ticking over, pouring drinks for familiar faces.

NRG Sports Cafe is definitely not a British pub, it’s a proper sports bar and we’re looking forward to visiting for a nightcap on a Thursday night after a long week at the office. When we arrive however we’re surprised to see just how quiet it is in Le Méridien village. The place is empty outdoors despite usually being a bubbling cauldron on energy. Then again, it is over 40 degrees outside and we’re visiting just before thousands of teachers and other summer holidaymakers get back after a few weeks (or more) away. So, we’re certain that in a few weeks time the place will be buzzing once again.

Stepping inside NRG Sports Cafe we’re delighted to see other human beings and we take our seats ready to settle in for a refreshing drink.

We start by testing ourselves by naming all the football clubs who’s crests are proudly emblazoned on the walls and wait for the servers to arrive back at the table with our glasses of hops. We don’t want to brag but we get all the clubs correct at the first time of asking (well, almost all of them anyway).

There’s something instantly likable about the venue, it’s casual and we can see ourselves watching a few matches here in the future. It’s not busy (yet, anyway) but there are a few pockets of people dotted around the room enjoying it as much as we are. In the corner, the pool table is egging us on to have a game and there is live sport on the screens because... Of course there is, it’s a sports bar after all.

Drinks are reasonably priced and we’ve made it in time for happy hour (just) so we end up paying under Dhs50 for two, which is alright in our books.

If you’re looking for a casual place to watch live sport and you have pool skills better than ours, then we recommend you add NRG Sports Cafe to your list and check it out for yourself soon.
