Have you met Mr Moto?
This lounge-meets-bar is the new kid on the block in Yas Marina. At first glance, he’s giving hipster vibes, with a heady dose of nostalgia. Sounds like our kind of guy.
As you walk past pristine yachts and boats on Yas Marina’s waterfront, Mr Moto’s mid-century wood exterior will catch your eye.
You’re here for a Japanese-American fusion, and if it’s after-work drinks and nibbles you seek, you’ve struck gold.
Choose from multiple seating areas to settle into for the evening, including spots at the bar. There’s a vintage sense to the space, and walls are dotted with shelves featuring vinyl records and art showcasing Frank Sinatra and The Godfather. Many of the tabletops mimic the black and white square tiles seen on the floor, adding a layer of modernity to the overall mid-century look.
Curating a menu with both small and large plates, Mr Moto’s offerings bring Japanese staples with a twist to the table. Think shishito peppers, sweet miso black cod and baby-gem gomae, featuring sesame dressing horseradish cream and hickory sticks. No Japanese eatery is complete without sushi, and Mr Moto understands the assignment, offering a selection of maki rolls, plus a smattering of yakitori. There’s more to this menu than you’d anticipate.
For starters, keep it light with parmesan covered edamame, which will set you back Dhs35. For a more hearty option, opt for the Nashville karaage, a tasty and aromatic fried chicken dish with spicy sauce, pickles and ranch for Dhs54.
The beverage menu offers a selection of Japanese short measures and signature mixed drinks, including one that features a Japanese charm to bring good luck.
Beyond the food and drinks, all eyes (or ears) are on the music. The soundtrack to Mr Moto is inspired by the listening lounges of Toyko, but with that American take we mentioned. Hip-hop tracks from yesteryear fill the room, creating a vibey atmosphere, perfect for a catch-up with mates or a fun date night.
It’s been nice meeting you, Mr Moto. We’ll definitely see you soon.
