Time Out Says
This week we’re dedicating these pages to proper pubs, because every now and then you need a break from 55th-floor lounge bars, intricate mixed drinks and bowls of stuffed olives.
And for those times you want a sub-Dhs20 pint, a bowl of nuts, a random football match from the Portuguese Primeira Liga and no natural light, Heroes is your place.
The pub is a stalwart of the Abu Dhabi nightlife scene having turned 20 this month, and we put that down to doing the simple things very well. You will not find any frills here. What you will find is a very generous happy hour,
a bunch of like-minded souls, top live music and good pub grub.
On our latest visit it’s early evening in midweek. The bar is not packed by any means, but it’s not quiet either (and it is open until 4am, so there’s plenty of time for it to fill up).
As soon as we take a seat, staff are over to take our order. A menu filled with lots of hops choices is placed before us. Drinks are around the Dhs40 mark. “Is there a happy hour?,” we ask, knowing full well the answer. There sure is and it means drinks are on average about Dhs22. That’s more like it. Upon choosing a Czech option we’re told that one is actually Dhs19 all day. That will do for us.
While it’s a little annoying that none of this information was offered up without asking, we’ll put that down to the place having a regular clientele that are surely aware of the daily deals.
Those deals are enough to keep anyone coming back. Tuesdays are for Etihad crew, who get a free drink then half price on food and drinks after that. Teachers get the same deal every Monday. It’s ladies’ night each Saturday, with three free drinks for females. There’s a regular quiz night, too, and a brilliant post-brunch deal on Fridays.
As if all of that, and the screening of Premier League football on big screens and really rather good food, wasn’t enough, throw in live music form The International Playboys throughout the week and you have the makings of the perfect pub.
You don’t make it to 20 in this city (and in the nightlife industry) without knowing what you’re doing, so here’s to Heroes.
