Barfly by Buddha-Bar

An Asian bar by the Grand Canal

We’ve said it many times before but somethings just bear repeating: Barfly by Buddha-Bar has one of the absolutely finest terraces in the city.

So while we love the indoor area with its long bar and creepy but cool headless statue (you’ll know what we mean if you’ve ever been there), we nearly always choose to sit outside if the weather permits it.

The huge space overlooks the still waters of the Grand Canal, and sitting with a cool drink in hand, watching the passing boats and glistening waters is an activity that’s hard to beat.

If there’s a group of you, you can choose to lay out on one of the big sofas, or for a more secluded date night and a few plates of tasty Asian bites, there are also tables set up near the water’s edge.

We’ve arrived at the Venetian Village venue just after 6pm and it’s still relatively quiet (surely we’re not the only ones partial to a few after-work drinks?).

There are only a handful of other tables occupied around us, but by the time we leave a few hours later, both the indoor and outdoor areas have filled up.
The chilled vibe suits us, and the atmospheric house music isn’t so loud that we have to shout to hear each other.

It’s the perfect spot for some pre-dinner drinks, and we decide to make the most of the Soleil Vista offer, which includes two hours of house beverages and tapas-style bites.

The deal applies to grape, hops and a couple of classic mixed drinks, and we decide to kick off with a few cranberry juice-based concoctions. The drinks are quick to arrive and served in pretty tall glasses. We feel ever so sophisticated as we sip them delicately (or attempt to, anyway) and listen to the gentle waves lapping just next to us.

The tapas spread is a mix of all the best Asian bites such as spring rolls, calamari and tuna tartare. It’s just the thing to tide us over until dinner, and it all tastes fresh and expertly made.

Other deals throughout the week include the Wednesday ladies’ night (free-flowing drinks until 11pm and 50 percent off food) and the Monday Sushi Social with unlimited sushi and house beverages for Dhs275.

If you’re after great drinks, fantastic sushi and a picturesque spot to catch up with your friends in, you really can’t do much better than this very trendy bar.
