The Scene by Simon Rimmer

A casual watering hole at Yas Marina

If you haven’t been to The Scene yet, we reckon it’s about time you sorted that out.

The casual pub and terrace opened towards the end of 2018, where Café D’Alsace used to sit on Yas Marina. What was a bang-average, family-friendly eatery has now been turned into a buzzing gastropub, offering something different to the bars that surround it.

For the first time there’s a pub in this area, and while a large part of it is decked out like a hops garden, there’s also a bar you can pull up a stool at and a more loungey area, that has the feel of a living room.

Anyone who’s been to the Dubai incarnation of The Scene, which opened four-and-a-bit years ago in the Marina, will know what to expect. It’s traditionally British but with a bit of a quirky twist.

The name above the door is that of Simon Rimmer, the British chef who hosts a popular Sunday morning cookery and chat show. If you’ve seen the show, or seen Rimmer himself, you’ll know that he’s laid back, charming and without pretensions. And you know what? The Scene mirrors all of those qualities.

You’d expect the menu here to be good, and you’d be right. We have already talked about the food in some detail, but if you’re here for a night out, just know you’re in line for some tasty bar snacks, too.

There are plenty of deals to be had as well. If you head down on a Monday night you’ll get a pint and a curry for Dhs99, Wednesday is ladies’ night with two hours of unlimited drinks when ordering food from the night’s set menu, and every Friday and Saturday you can get five house drinks for Dhs125 all day long. Weekdays have happy hours from 3pm until 8pm, when a selection of drinks are available for Dhs25. So, plenty of ways to enjoy yourself without spending a fortune, then. We approve.

So, it’s good value, drinks choices are varied and staff are excellent, too. It’s rare that a place opens and gets everything right straight away, but The Scene manages to do it. From Stars ’N’ Bars along to Iris, there’s now a lovely stretch of venues at Yas Marina, each offering something different, and we’re all for it.
