Todd English’s Olives

A Mediterranean-style bar and restaurant from celebrity chef Todd English

Todd English’s Olives

We live in a city full of countless fancy bars and spectacular venues. We’re also not short on  impressive locations to watch the sun set.

So it’s refreshing to realise we haven’t become totally immune to beautiful views.

We arrive at Todd English’s Olives just as the sky is turning a glorious shade of orange, and we can’t resist taking one of the seats in the outdoor area by the Grand Canal.

Sitting only about two metres from the water, it’s a perfectly relaxing spot to enjoy a drink.

As the name suggests, the Venetian Village is designed to replicate the elegant canal-side buildings of Venice.

Although it’s not quite possible to recreate the historical architecture or authentic air of the real city, the laid-back vibes at this Mediterranean bar and restaurant feel very Italian.

We order a drink from our friendly and chatty server, and try to work out the best angle for photographing the wonderful scene before us.

The beverages are reasonably priced, but we’ve also arrived in time to catch the aperitivo deal.

Valid from 6pm to 9pm, Sunday to Wednesday, it offers two hours of free-flowing beverages and Italian nibbles for Dhs100.

Following the Italian tradition of early-evening drinks and bites makes it seem even more like we have been transported over to our favourite boot-shaped country.

Our only quibble is that the music blasting out from neighbouring bar Tokyo Grill doesn’t quite fit the mood.

However, as the sun disappears, the candles are lit and the patio heaters are dragged out. It’s hard to imagine a better way to end the day then with a refreshing beverage at this classy bar.

Eventually, we start to feel a bit chilly, so decide to head inside.  There’s a retro feel to the swish bar area, and we’re enjoying the comfy leather seats and orange booths.

As you’d expect, the food menu is filled with plenty of tasty options should you feel peckish. This includes crispy calamari fritti with spicy tomato sauce, and a platter of dips, olives and soft flatbreads.

As we finish our drinks, we’re already planning when we can return to try out the Friday sunset brunch, or the Monday unlimited flatbreads deal.

With a super setting, cool bar and plenty of promotions, we’re big fans of Todd English’s Olives.
