Back Yard Bistro

Blue burgers, motorbike tables and a 12-hour happy hour make this place a hit

Remember when you were young (if your memory stretches that far back) and all you wanted to do was run around a junkyard, playing with tyres and old bangers rusting in the wings.

Making friends with older kids and running away from the owner’s guard dog. No? Just us? Well, if you saw one too many American kids’ films from the ’80s like us then you’ll have had the same childhood aspirations.

You now have the chance to fulfil that dream at Back Yard Bistro. Caught somewhere between where characters from the Beano would get up to mischief and the end zone of a teen slasher movie, the décor in BYB is all U-bends morphing into petrol cans with a gasket or two thrown in for good, edgy measure. Even the toilet sinks have been salvaged and turned into a novelty – we won’t ruin the surprise. There are TVs beaming out rolling sport and a huge terrace at the back. True, it’s quite a blokey bar but solid drink deals and a Tuesday ladies’ night are enough of an attraction to make it accessible for all.

We grab a table made from an old motorbike and take a seat on an old gas canister and order. There is a strong list of mixed drinks and happy hour runs from noon to midnight everyday – meaning Dhs21 pints for all. This isn’t a spot for fancy drinks and fancy clientele, it’s casual, easy going and perfect for a quick one after work or a lazy weekend with friends. The food menu is dotted with classics but it’s one of the unusual plates that’s the star: beef sliders served on a blue bun. Just like dreams of playing in a junkyard, they beam us back to our childhood.

The bottom line
Fun décor and one not to miss.
