A decade can seem to pass in a flash – but life can always be preserved from behind a lens.
How many of us can go even a single day without capturing a snapshot of our own travels, from an Instagram-worthy image of a restaurant meal to a striking landmark we simply must get a picture of?
In our own way, with our trusty smartphones, we are creating our own personal archive of history.
The spirit of the photographer – with that innate desire to chronicle a moment or safeguard a memory – lives in all of us, even if the talent to do the world around us justice may not.
This is why the art of photography remains so fascinating to so many – and is a big reason why an Emirati photography competition is currently celebrating its milestone tenth anniversary.
The 10 years of Emirates Photography Competition exhibition, being held at Manarat Al Saadiyat, showcases an impressive selection of winning works and best entries over the last decade.
The exhibition will celebrate the key role the competition has played in developing and encouraging UAE creative talent, as well as putting on display stunning images from gifted photographers drawn from all over the globe.
The showcase is divided into two main sections: Spotlight features a selection of works by ten top Emirati and international photographers focusing on a wide range of engaging subjects such as nature, wildlife, portraits, people, sports, travel and much more; while Through Time includes shortlisted photographs from the nine previous editions of the competition.
The Emirates Photography Competition was first launched back in 2006 and participation in the first two editions was limited to UAE nationals.
By the time the third competition came around however, and support for it had begun to grow, the entry criteria was broadened to include photographers from all GCC countries, with snappers hailing from all over the planet welcomed from the fourth edition onwards.
The thought-provoking exhibition, which runs until the end of March, also features presentations by winners of previous competitions, as well as a panel discussion led by expert photographers.
