Creative talents in Abu Dhabi have gotten into the Christmas spirit early – after showing off their festive flair to boost a worthy cause.
To coincide with the Year of Giving, the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi joined forces with Yas Mall fashion store TRYANO to invite local artists to create their own versions of the store’s iconic nutcracker, the centrepiece of its Christmas campaign.
The Bespoke Abu Dhabi initiative proved a huge success with more than 50 submitting their ideas using a sketch template available on the TRYANO website.
The entrants were whittled down to a shortlist of ten, with the finalists given three weeks to paint the two metre high Nutcracker pieces.
Their impressive masterpieces will be showcased for the first time at TRYANO on November 8, to coincide with the start of the annual Abu Dhabi Art fair.
In support of The Year of Giving in the UAE, the nutcrackers will be part of a silent auction at a VIP event in Abu Dhabi’s premium department store on November 8, with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish UAE.
Winning artists include local Emirati students, emerging fashion designers, expatriate artists as well as creatives in the UAE who were inspired by themes such as childhood nostalgia, vintage toys, the idea of a ‘superhero’, love, peace, strength, expatriate culture, as well as the UAE’s heritage, traditions and urban symbols like telephone poles:
