Where are we off to this week, Time Out?
We’re heading to the Eastern Mangroves Promenade. Happy?
Yes! But isn’t it just a hotel?
Nope. The Eastern Mangroves complex is a hotel, marina, retail and residential destination. It’s also an urban sanctuary offering a luxury escape from the bustle of city life.
Tell me more…
This leisure hotspot, which also offers stunning views of the Abu Dhabi skyline, features two luxurious urban residential components as well as the 222-room five-star Eastern Mangroves Hotel and Spa by Anantara and Eastern Mangroves Suites by Jannah. And then there are the restaurants, of course.
You know I love my food…
We do indeed. You’ll be glad to know the promenade has a variety of top restaurants, including Flooka, Carluccio’s, Boa Steakhouse, Café Blanc and Johnny Rockets. Plus there’s a Starbucks if you’re keen for a quick coffee.
Okay, but what are the mangroves exactly?
The protected Eastern Mangroves district represents a dynamic ecosystem consisting of mature grey mangroves interspersed with halophytes (salt-water plants) on the higher grounds. The grey mangrove is the only species that occurs in the UAE, as it is the sole one that flourishes in the hot and salty conditions experienced here. The mangroves play a great role in protecting the shorelines from erosion. They also provide areas for native fish to breed.
What’s the best way to experience the mangroves?
There are a variety of companies that run tours and activities from the Eastern Mangroves Promenade, including ART Marine Marinas, Pearl Journey, Capt. Tony’s and Eco-Donut boats. They’re all pretty fun!
Check out our vlog from when we went kayaking there recently
Is it true there are flamingos?
It certainly is. The mangroves act as carbon sinks and are destinations for migratory birdlife, including flamingos, which can be found in abundance in the area between November and April.
Fun, food, nature and luxury!
What more could you ask for?
Only on Eastern Mangroves Promenade
This popular Mediterranean seafood restaurant combines the classic fresh flavours of the ocean with a modern twist. The fresh catches of the day are artfully displayed on ice and served cooked on rock salt. Not only is the food great at Flooka, but you’ll have the chance to enjoy an evening on the stunning patio overlooking the mangroves. Now that’s what we call dinner with a view.
