Huge sporting festival kicks off in Abu Dhabi

A massive summer of sport has kicked off in Abu Dhabi today, and the whole community is being invited to pitch in.

Following on from the success of last year’s debut event, the Abu Dhabi Sports Festival is back bigger and better than ever with all ages being invited to take part in a 15 sports, and it until the end of August.

The aim of the sporting spectacular, which carries the slogan of “Stay Active, Stay Healthy” is to get everyone up off their couches and fighting fit during the summer months.

With the activities being held in the cool conditions of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, you can’t even use the sweltering summer heat as an excuse for not taking part.

Games being held during the packed programme include traditional sports such as football, basketball, badminton, volleyball, mini-tennis, plus intriguing activities such as jungle land bungee trampoline, gyroscope and a skating park for teens to show off their skills and yoga and cross fit for the ladies.

The opening day has seen the launch of the kids summer camp, aimed at kids aged between six and 12. It includes touch rugby, jungle land, a skate park, rope skating and battle land, overseen by a team of coaches and supervisors.

His Excellency Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of organisers Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said: “The unwavering support of HH Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, is paving our way to introduce new initiatives that will encourage all segments of the community and family members in Abu Dhabi emirate to engage in various and suitable sporting activities that will help them all to stay active, and to lead healthy lifestyle.”

Entry to the centre is free, with a fee paid for any sporting activity you decide to try, apart from the running track and table tennis, which are free to try. You can pay for sporting sessions in person or online at
