Ultimate Athletics in Abu Dhabi
Toddlers, newbies and elite performers train with Ultimate Athletics Discuss this article
Memories of the Rio Olympics might be fading, but athletics isn’t just reserved for the summer showcase every four years. And, in Abu Dhabi, there’s an organisation keeping the city active throughout the year.
Ultimate Athletics organises training sessions and race events for athletes of all ages and ability levels. Toddlers through to elite athletes can join the programmes that take place at New York University Abu Dhabi, on Saadiyat Island.
“We give athletes a chance to shine all year round,” says Lisa Campbell, the founder of Ultimate Athletics. “The beauty of athletics is it’s an individual sport for many different body types. With speed, endurance and power events, there’s something for everyone.”
The club provides a great introduction to the various forms of athletics. The Ultimate Tots classes for kids aged four to six focus on learning to run, jump and throw. “These are the fundamentals of not just athletics, but most sports, giving kids a good foundation in core skills,” says Campbell.
Ultimate Youth takes a multi-disciplined approach, through which children aged seven to 12 get to experience all the events throughout a term. Then there’s Ultimate Teens and Adults, with a focus on speed development and endurance sessions, plus training in high jump, long jump and hurdles. One-to-one coaching is also available for those looking to work on technique development and correction.
But there’s no need to feel intimidated by the prospect of joining the club. “Those who have never tried athletics are most welcome, but no-one is completely new to running,” Campbell says. “We will just teach you the most efficient way to run, and a whole lot of new skills on top.”
There’s also a competitive element for those wanting to test themselves against others, with Ultimate Race nights taking place monthly from October to May.
But, ultimately, this is a club open to anyone. Campbell adds: “We are a friendly, community club. We not only coach, we educate, with our workshops on healthy eating, injury prevention and mental preparation. Being an athlete is more than just training, it’s a way of life.”
