Café Firenze - Restaurant Award Highly Commended
Business spot on Hamdan Street 6 Reviews
There was a time when Café Firenze would have slipped comfortably into our cheap eats section. Not anymore. The up-market area calls for up-market prices, though if you keep one eye on your wallet you can still eat well and come away relatively unscathed.
If the weather is forgiving (or you’re out for the evening), take a table on the veranda, where the view over the park makes for an unusually lush vista (this being the Abu Dhabi summer, there aren’t too many joggers to blot the canvas). Not that the interior isn’t without its peculiar charms, done out with plenty of shiny trinkets, none of which appear to originate from Florence. It’s one of the few havens left for tobacco smokers, too, which will either make or break your decision to eat here.
The food is excellent. All of it freshly prepared in a ‘homemade’ style. The baby rocket and dried tomato salad (Dhs36) is fresh and crisp, the tomatoes meaty but tender like chunks of quality steak. The spinach cannelloni (Dhs48) is almost smug in its dedication to the homemade label, and the seafood pizza (pizza fruiti del mare, Dhs45) is so packed with chunks of fresh crustacean that you might mistake it for a well-composed sandwich.
Café Firenze is unique enough in its location and quirkiness that it stays continuously busy, a popular choice among locals and expats alike – it’s the sort of place afternoons get lost in.
