Shay Madhboot

Review: Family-friendly eatery that serves up a mean brekkie Discuss this article

This cosy café has been causing quite the stir on the Abu Dhabi dining scene – so we couldn’t wait to find out if it was more than just a storm in a tea (or should that be chai) cup.

Shay Madhboot – which translates as perfect tea in Arabic – has been building up a fine reputation for the quality of its karak, a smooth and creamy chai simmered with milk that is a beautiful sweet treat when made right.

However, it’s not all about the tea. The first thing that strikes you is the community feel at this intimate venue, far removed from the often sterile atmosphere of hotel lobby lounges and tea rooms.

We soak up the neighbourly vibes while we tuck into the shakshouka, a brilliant breakfast dish of poached eggs drenched in a rich tomatoey sauce.

We certainly feel sunny side up after devouring it and follow up with a moreish poratta wrap filled with lovely cheesy centre, with a sweet edge thanks to a touch of honey. The tasty French toast works as a breakfast pick-me-up or a late-night snack, and all dishes are top-notch for all the gang.

The aroma of sweet karak might lure you in, but the high quality food will ensure you stick around for more than a cuppa.

The bottom line
Tasty dishes in a warm, friendly setting.
