Review: High-end steakhouse with a classy dining room Reviews

When you head to a steakhouse there are few things you would be forgiven for expecting: a dark, moody, atmospheric dining room; a rather hefty bill; and, well, to eat steak.

Park Bar & Grill will not disappoint on any of those criteria. It’s an elegant dining room, all white tablecloths and dark wooden floors. An open kitchen adds a touch of drama and theatre to proceedings, which is most welcome when the dining room is quiet. Staff also do a good job of creating an atmosphere when the space lacks one.

The menu isn’t expansive and features all of the usual suspects. However, along with the steaks and other grilled meats there are also plenty of seafood options as starters and alternative mains.

As an entrée the tuna tartare is superb. The fresh fish comes with a prettily piped mango sauce, adding a burst of colour and fruity zest that cuts through the rich fish.

While we don’t think the cuts of meat here are the best in the city, they are certainly handled with care by the chefs who know how to cook them perfectly.

It’s a classy place that, to our relief, doesn’t actually come with as high a price tag as some of its steakhouse peers.

The bottom line

A solid choice but doesn’t really wow.

Unfortunately let themselves down on quite a few fronts and really disappointed as we were very much looking forward to it:
* when booking told us restaurant was full and just squeezed us in, but was less than 60% full all evening in the end
* waiter wanted to show off his memory skills by memorising order instead of noting it down - he repeated it wrong, then brought us wrong food
* open kitchen was chaotic - the head chef was clearly angry at the kitchen staff and shouting at everyone (and he was hardly Gordon Ramsey) - such antics should be kept to a closed kitchen or better behaviour demonstrated in an open kitchen
* wine glasses were not changed during different wine orders
* main course was served 1h30m after order taken - restaurant was no-where near that full/busy, and just seemed overwhelmed by the few orders - hopefully just teething problems
