When it comes to Lebanese cuisine, it can be all too easy to think you’ve been there, done that and bought the hummus.

Now don’t get us wrong, we love the hearty fare served up by the wealth of Beirut-inspired eateries in the capital, but giving diners a fresh taste from the stylish nation is quite the culinary challenge. But, it is a challenge that has been taken up with gusto by the team.

The venue, based in the five-star Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, catches the eye immediately with its elegant indoor dining space, decked out in striking whites and pinks and colourful artworks adorning the walls.

As beautiful as the indoor area is, however, we can’t resist stepping out onto the idyllic outdoor terrace, complete with a wonderfuly relaxing water wall, comfortable shaded seating spots and spectacular views looking out onto turquoise waters and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Enchanted by the setting, we can’t wait to try out the food and kick off with delicious kibbeh, a torpedo-shaped snack filled with mince meat and lathered in tahini sauce, and a lovely grilled halloumi. Impressed by the fine flavours and generous portions, our appetites are well and truly whetted for the mains.

Traditional mixed grill is a meaty delight, filled with beautifully barbecued and tasty cubes of chicken, lamb and beef.

The show-stealer, though, is the dajaj mahswi al fakhara, a whole chicken cooked in a clay pot, brought to your table by a chef with no little amount of theatre.

The succulent chicken, mixed with potatoes and carrots in a rich sauce, falls off the bone, revealing a pretty pile of peas.

If you thought you knew it all about Lebanese food, it is time to think again and pay a visit.
