Museum Café

Review: Top-notch food in a bustling outlet for Louvre-lovers Discuss this article

Avenue with a difference, this is the on-site café at Louvre Abu Dhabi. With hundreds of visitors to the museum every day, it would be easy for the eatery to rest on its laurels and churn out safe fast food that can be cooked and devoured by the masses quickly, easily and cheaply. But, do you really think such a landmark site would do that? Of course not.

For a start, the man behind the menu is Mauritian master Roudy Petersen of Catch. Then there’s the global interest in the Louvre itself. People from almost every walk of life from across the globe are likely to come through the doors, so it’s got to be good, right?

The café is in one of the outside buildings that you’ll reach once you’re through the museum itself. It has a terrace overlooking the Arabian Gulf and an indoor dining space that is more perfunctory. It’s a shame the rather industrial steps into the café aren’t quite as splendid as the rest of the museum. The toilets also need a little more care.

Onto the food, and the watermelon salad is a little on the small side at Dhs59 (four cubes of melon topped with spiced feta sitting in a gazpacho-style sauce) but it’s very good. The wagyu burger comes with excellent skin-on fries, the meat is juicy and the bun is soft but holds together well, while the yuzu mocktail is very refreshing after a few hours on your feet, and represents much better value than a Dhs22 can of Diet Coke.

Service is rushed, as you might expect due to the high footfall, but food of this quality deserves to be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. Overall, this venue is many notches above most museum diners, if not quite of a Turner Prize-winning standard.

The bill (for two)
1x yuzu lemongrass mocktail Dhs28
1x wagyu beef burger Dhs99
1x spicy watermelon salad Dhs59
1x diet coke Dhs22
Total (including taxes) Dhs208

The bottom line

Worth your time once you’ve seen the art.
