This fine-dining Indian eatery definitely comes with a view – bag a seat by the window of the rear room and you’ll get to look out over the Corniche and the new Fairmont on the breakwater. Signature is sold as an avant-garde “art on a plate” offering from Indian celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, and, although we’re not totally sure about that, it certainly does a good curry.

The popadoms come with a pretty tree of pickles and sauces, but beware, to the uninitiated, the menu can be confusing, so ask the staff to help with ordering (the kebabs we ordered weren’t what we thought they’d be). Effort is given to the presentation of the starters, however, a little stack of stuffed rumani paneer kurarey, the double fish kebabs (spiced patties) are laid out nicely and are well cooked and flavoured.

The mains come in the more traditional manor of little one-portion pots. The lalla mussa dal, a slow-cooked creamy black lentil stew is rich and buttery, and top-notch comfort food. The butter chicken is also an indulgent joy, although the naan is a little dry and tasteless. We were fascinated, though, by the pineapple raita – it’s essentially just fruit and yogurt, but is a little touch we’ve not seen before. It’s not art, but it does taste good.

The bottom line

Fine dining Indian with a great view.
