There are times when you want a quiet, classy restaurant, where you can relax and savour a fine food and perfectly-matched drinks. There are other times when you want a burger and fries with ketchup. And for those times, there is Stars ’N’ Bars.
This venue knows what it does well and sticks to it. For those who haven’t been (and if not, why not?), our current reigning Sports Bar of the Year is a vast space, with dozens of screens showing dozens of different sports, chairs are made from racing car seats, there are pour-your-own hops tables, live bands, quiz nights, drinks and food deals, and, incredibly, even more things going on throughout the week.
The food matches the environment perfectly. You’ll find bumper portions of plenty of deep-fried things, burgers with loads of toppings, steaks and pizzas. And salads, such as the SnB Signature, above.
There are too many leaves, but the mix of chicken, gorgonzola, candied walnuts, raisins and diced red apple manages to mix sweet and savoury flavours and textures well. It also comes in a huge fried tortilla.
The appetisers are the biggest hit but calorie-counters might want to look away now. The platter includes deep-fried mozarella, prawns, courgette and onion rings, and chicken wings. The prawns and wings win the day. The courgettes are too thick (thin fries would be better) and the mozzarella is bland, especially once cold.
The burger is messy, with spicy cheese, caramelised onions and chipotle mayo slopping all over the place. The meat would benefit from being more pink and the chips are a little pallid, but these aren’t deal-breakers.
We’re not sure anyone really cares, either, because this sports bar is all about the vibe and having fun. The food certainly plays its part in that.
