For those who have eaten in street-side shacks in Bangkok, trying Thai food in one of the grand hotel restaurants in the UAE can feel almost alien. Pachaylen, which was highly commended at the Time Out Abu Dhabi Restaurant Awards 2016, has done well to create an atmosphere in a room with high ceilings, but, despite not being the biggest space, could benefit from being a little more cosy.
The food is so good, however, we could eat it anywhere and still be happy.
The staff are a bit keen to take our order – they return twice within two minutes of handing over the menus – but they are very smiley and careful to ask us if we have any food allergies.
When we finally order, we’re served our drinks in plastic glasses, a little confusing, considering we’re adults and indoors and all. But we soon forget about that, when the pan-fried crab cakes with cucumber relish and chilli sauce arrive. They are soft and retain the crab flavour, which is something so many others have failed to do. Combined with the freshness and heat of the relish, it is absolutely delicious.
Tempura vegetables are perfectly cooked and we could eat spoonfuls of the sweet ginger sauce that comes with it. But we have a little trouble with the gigantic plate of neua phad bai yee rah, a stir-fry of Nebraskan beef. Thinking we’re brave enough to ignore the three chillis on the menu, we dive in, and agonising heat creeps up on us.
After taking a break to “cool down”, we dig in to the tiger prawn gaeng chu-chi khung red curry. The prawns are incredibly well cooked and we love the Thai black rice it comes with. At this point, we’re full, but decide to order some coconut ice cream regardless. We’re pretty sure what arrives is vanilla, but it doesn’t matter, it’s enough for us to slip out of the door with a satisfied glow.
