Caramel gets pretty busy for its Thursday and Friday evening brunches. During the week, however, it’s a far more sedate affair. The setting is nice and the DJ is good – we enjoy listening to a bit of ’90s hip-hop with our dinner – but where are all the people?

It’s perhaps due to the fact that Saadiyat Island is a bit out of the way for weekday evening food and drinks, because it’s certainly not due to the quality of dishes available here.

With an established menu, as well as a line-up of new dishes on offer, the selection is surprisingly different. There are classics done with a flourish, such as the truffled fish and chips. (In fact, there are a lot of dishes with added truffle. We’re not exactly sure where this fits into Caramel’s self-labelled “American twist”.)

The shared bites are the standout pick. The buratta cheese works, with a few simple cherry vine tomatoes and crisp breads, boasting a luscious ooze from within. The “sizzling hot rock” comes with, er, a sizzling hot rock and paper-thin sirloin steak that you can cook to your own liking. It’s great.

After a bit of a breather, we then move onto two of the brand-new mains. The spicy lobster spaghetti is well cooked and has a good, spicy kick. We would definitely order it again.

The same goes for the chicken picante (Spanish for hot and spicy). It comes flattened and crusted, and it’s perfectly cooked. Our only niggle is that it comes on its own, with no sides or vegetables, which would have elevated the plate as a whole.

While it may be a little lonely here on a weeknight, we can’t see any reason, other than perhaps its location, that it should be. Then again, at least you’re guaranteed a table.

The Bill (for two)
1x large water Dhs28
1x sizzling hot rock Dhs110
1x burrata cheese Dhs60
1x spicy lobster spaghetti Dhs130
1x chicken picante Dhs110
Total Dhs438

The bottom line
Interesting food but light on customers.
