The deals are good, but atmosphere is lacking in one of our favourite spots Discuss this article

It’s been a busy few months over at The Galleria, with new restaurants opening up every few weeks. The wildly popular Peruvian hotspot Coya has just opened its Abu Dhabi branch, weeks after the already-successful Mexican eatery Loca, and everyone’s favourite seasoner has opened Nusr-Et in the same space. Amid all this fanfare, however, we decide to visit an old favourite, Bentley Bistro & Grill.

First off, we’re surprised by the lack of customers on a Friday night. Last year this place would be buzzing on weekends, but on this night it’s quiet and lacking atmosphere. It seems all the new hot-shot restaurants are over-shadowing the old-timers already.

Despite that, we’re intrigued to hear about the Friday deal, where you spend Dhs400 on food and get a bottle of grape for free. It’s great value for money. So, agreeing to spend that much, we opt for a couple of main courses – the roasted red snapper with buttered saffron potatoes and prawn and clam velouté, as well as a 200-gram grass-fed wagyu fillet steak with lobster gratin.

The fish dish is incredibly well cooked. The flesh is flaky and juicy – although we’d prefer the skin to be far crispier – and the silky potatoes are a real treat. However, the thick, creamy velouté lacks any real flavour or seasoning.

Similarly, the meat is also tasty and well cooked, and the lobster gratin with braised leek is a delicious touch, but, again, a disappointing mushroom sauce lets it all down.

It’s also annoying to see the Bentley fries don’t come with any detectable trace of the truffle or parmesan that the menu promises.

So, while we commend the attempts at making high-quality food more affordable, when it’s not done right, is it worth it?

The bill (for two)
1x large water Dhs27
1x red snapper Dhs190
1x 200-gram wagyu fillet Dhs295
1x Bentley fries Dhs33
1x broccoli Dhs30
1x mushroom sauce Dhs30
Total (net) Dhs605

The bottom line
A top venue that seems to have gone backwards.
