We’ve never been to 1940s Chicago. The lack of a time machine makes it difficult. But if we did have the ability to travel back through the decades, we’d hope to find places that looked like the Four Season’s new steakhouse Butcher & Still.

The American prohibition theme has been executed perfectly here. The main dining area looks like a study that has been hidden away behind a secret door. Moody lighting highlights of-the-era ornaments placed on shelves and table tops, while the open kitchen adds to buzz of chatter. And if you get lost in this world of the 1940s, stepping out onto the terrace brings you back to reality with views across the water to downtown Abu Dhabi.

But all of this is just a sideshow – a very well designed one at that – to the main event here: the steaks. Some complimentary truffle bread with salted butter whets the appetite perfectly, and the seafood starters are worth exploring. But the cuts of meat are exceptional.

The steaks are flown in from farms in the United States, and you’ll be wanting to personally thank the farmers after eating here. The rib-eye is juicy and flavourful, even when cooked medium-well. Its slightly charred edges add a delightful texture and taste to the meat.

If you only opt for one side, make it the twice-baked potato. It’s a simple dish, but indulgent, topped with cream, beef bacon and melted cheese.

Asking for suggestions from the staff is a pleasure here; they’re knowledgeable and engaging, helping diners to make well informed decisions.

It’s hard to find fault at Butcher & Still. And even the bill will seem reasonable considering the standard of the setting, food and service. We’ll be back, and we highly recommend you check it out, too.

The bill (for two)
