We are spoilt for choice when it comes to Italian restaurants. There’s more than one to suit every budget, mood and occasion. Some create modern, yet authentic versions of classic dishes. Others adapt their flavours to suit the masses.

BiCE’s four-page menu is full of upgraded and creative twists on old standards.

The fried calamari and shrimp is a popular starter at the restaurant and we can see why. Greasy, chewy and tough are not words you’d use to describe this golden-hued basket. Together with the dipping sauce served on the side, this generous portion is light and crunchy. A quick squeeze of lemon and it’s easy to picture yourself enjoying this by the Mediterranean Sea.

BiCE’s list of pastas doesn’t feature the common penne arrabiata-type dishes. So if that is what you’re after you’d be best off heading to the mall.

The spinach and ricotta ravioli may sound like a common plate, but it is jazzed up with an aromatic mushroom sauce with black truffle. The ravioli is generously filled and there’s enough to keep you going until your next meal. Its sauce is rich in flavour and includes a variety of fungi.

If you’re more inclined towards a meatier main, the braised lamb shank with fregola is a wise pick. The chunky piece of meat doesn’t need coaxing off the bone and is best described as mouth-watering. The little beads of saffron-infused fregola roll around in the thick sauce and are a great contrast to the soft meat.

If you’ve only got a little room for dessert and are looking for a sure-fire hit, pick the tiramisu. It’s got a strong coffee presence and isn’t sickly sweet or too heavy on the cream, and is a perfect way to end your meal.
