Thanks to the sheer amount of steakhouses in the city, you can dig into your red meat in dimly-lit romantic settings or stylish venues overlooking the skyline. But what we like about BOA Steakhouse is that it’s one of the few restaurants that has a relaxing view over the picturesque mangroves. Located on the Eastern Mangroves Promenade, BOA is already one of the most popular steakhouses in the capital, and we’re back to see if it still brings the magic.

From the moment we arrive, one thing is certain: the service is impeccable. The staff are kind, friendly and attentive, and so is the management. It’s not often you go to a restaurant where the manager strikes up conversation, gives recommendations and helps his floor staff clear plates. We’re impressed, to say the least.

For starters we decide on seafood (perhaps inspired by our stunning watery view), opting for the pan-seared scallops, served in a green pea purée. The portion is larger than expected and the scallops are light and cooked well. Then, it’s straight for the steak menu for mains, settling for the 225g US Black Angus tenderloin. For sides we pick the sautéed spinach and grilled jumbo asparagus. The kitchen still sources some of the best cuts in the city, and the tasty veggies complement the meal perfectly. In fact, the entire meal is delicious and, for the health conscious, we’ve gone carb free.

That all changes when the manager brings us a surprise portion of crab and black truffle gnocchi, compliments of the chef. Initially we dip our fork into the bowl just to be polite, but once we taste it, we can’t stop. Thanks to the rich flavour, perfectly cooked gnocchi and crumbled layer on top, it’s the highlight of our meal. It’s so good it make us re-evaluate our entire relationship with carbs.

The bill (for one)
1x scallops Dhs75
1x225g tenderloin steak Dhs225
1x Spinach Dhs35
1x Asparagus Dhs40
Total Dhs375

The bottom line Faultless from beginning to end.

This is the kind of restaurant that someone in their 20s would find really "sophisticated" - the decor is the usual cliched combination of chrome and leather and what not, and the ambience is not really conducive to relaxing. The prices are horrendously expensive for what you get. None of the steaks are grass-fed, they're all grain-fed, and they weren't that tasty. Service was OK but the staff need more training and experience - our waitress was very friendly but kept talking to us non-stop in an over-eager attempt to explain the menu. On top of that, they have some sort of dress code - this tells you everything you need to know about this place: you're not going to be able to relax. Just another very expensive restaurant.
