A menu that will entice guests, but lacks true quality Discuss this article

Gabbiano at Novotel Abu Dhabi Gate is located in somewhat of a disjointed area, stuck between the airport and Maqta bridge. We visit the Italian restaurant hoping that the menu is worth travelling for.

We decide to sit outside as there are a few people milling around and the waterfront makes for pleasant viewing. We start with tomato bruschetta while our guest opts for the smoked tuna carpaccio. The diced tomatoes on the bruschetta have a gentle hint of oregano and the sweet balsamic bread it is lying on adds a much-needed tang. We just wish there was more of a garlic punch. The carpaccio is indeed smoky, which is balanced by the mixed berries sprinkled on top.

Mains arrive almost ten minutes after we finish: the rack of crusted lamb for us and the pan seared salmon in lemon butter sauce for our guest.

The lamb is cooked and seasoned well, but there is an abundance of jus and a pepper coulis that overpowers the meat. The salmon, despite being perfectly cooked and of a good size, is drowned in pure butter. A real shame considering the quality of the fish.

The food quality here varies, so we won’t be hurrying back.

The bottom line A few changes to the menu and it may bring in the diners.
