A good Mexican is few and far between in the capital, but there’s one place that’s been getting it right since its opening in October last year.

The restaurant in question is Barbacoa and its secret is that it makes everything from scratch on a daily basis. When we walk in we can see the chefs preparing the food in front of our eyes so we can see how fresh the ingredients are and what methods of cooking are used.
The restaurant is relatively small with a modern deli-style layout and bright flashes of colour, while Mexican music plays in the background.

General manager of Barbacoa JJ Vidal is on hand to explain how they use fresh, local vegetables and source dry ingredients from Mexico. We choose the signature barbacoa braised beef, which has been slow-cooked in spices.

The burrito is jam-packed with diced onions, chopped coriander, guacamole, a squeeze of lime juice and pico de gallo and a mild salsa. For a spicy kick we add chipotle Dijon sauce and try a side order of the refried beans, which are the most authentic we’ve tried in the capital. The whole experience at Barbacoa is excellent, service to taste.

The bottom line
A healthy and authentic Mexican treat.
