With so many seafood restaurants in the city proposing similar cuisine, it’s refreshing to find something a little different. That special something is Flooka. And that fresh fish you’ve been searching for is served in an abundance of creative ways at the Mediterranean and Lebanese inspired seafood restaurant.

Built out over the water off Eastern Mangroves Promenade, the views are understandably stunning. Choose to dine al fresco and you’ll be sitting above the water with stretching views of the mangroves, and the Reem Island skyline glistens on the horizon. The ceiling feature inside of a shimmering shoal of fish suspended over diners in the light and airy interior is impressive. But impressive décor and terrace aside, the seafood mezze and fresh fish on the menu steal the show.

We order a hummus which is perfectly creamy and mopped up with warm flatbread sprinkled with onion seeds. A mix of mezze dishes follows: smoked salmon, fried calamari, fish falafel and kibbeh lateen – a version of kibbeh made from cracked wheat, pumpkin and stuffed full with spinach and pine kernels.

The calamari is lightly battered and of a faultless consistency, while the thinly sliced smoked salmon with lemon juice is refreshing and moreish. But the star of the show is the fish falafels; light, crumbly and perfect dipped in the hummus.

For mains, we can’t refuse choosing our own fresh catch from the ice display. Our waiter suggests we have the hammour if we’re after a bigger fillet. As it’s an over-farmed fish, we’re not keen on ordering it. But all the fish here couldn’t be fresher unless it was still swimming in the local waters so we go with sea bass. For fans of seafood craving the freshest catch they can find, Flooka is a culinary journey not to be missed.

The bill (for two)
Kibbeh lateen Dhs39
Smoked salmon Dhs65
Calamari Dhs41
Fish falafel Dhs50
Fish fillet Dhs132
Total Dhs327

The bottom line Creative seafood with a quirky twist.
