We want to lean into 18 Degrees but unfortunately the sky-high Hyatt Capital Gate restaurant is not as impressive as its curved architecture.

The setting is luxurious and seductive, set with low lighting and dramatic artwork. The restaurant is spacious with intimate booths, a romantic outdoor terrace spot and three ‘show’ kitchens which add to the theatrical mise-en-scène.

We are wowed by the view, the cool ambiance and initially, by the ambitious Eastern Mediterranean-style menu split into fare from Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Lebanon.

The fun is in mixing and matching starters and mains by country which is a little dizzying at first. We’re indecisive and hesitant to pair a Syrian starter with an Italian main, for example.

But this is where 18 Degrees’ stunning service comes into play. Our knowledgeable waiter diligently talks us through the menu and put us at ease with his recommendations, continuing to be attentive throughout the evening.

Highlights include the lobster ravioli served with stracciatella cheese, violet chips and chives, and the beef tenderloin crusted with pistachio pepper, olives and a pomegranate glaze.

We start with a vast and tenderly sliced bed of octopus carpaccio from Italy, thinly dressed with basil oil and bitter black Ligurian olives.

The carpaccio is fresh but lacks extra flavour – it is without evidence of a zingy lemon, ginger or chilli dressing that would elevate the dish. The plate is generous but without a combination of interesting flavours we lack enthusiasm to finish it.

The deep-fried Grecian calamari with semolina, cajun spice and aioli sauce is soggy and pale in colour, we eagerly look forward to our main course as it leaves the table.

The pan-fried salmon fillet lifts our hopes and gives the Greek menu a second chance. The fish melts in the mouth as if it was caught two minutes before, and the crushed potatoes are deliciously set off with fresh oregano and lemon butter sauce. This dish is a complete triumph.

Sadly, Syrian fare is let down by the mixed grill platter which consists of a limp beef kafta, shish taouk, onion and black grilled tomato. For Dhs180 we’re startled that the difference between this dish and the cheaper Levantine cuisine you can find in the UAE isn’t more apparent.

The food is hit and miss and leaves us wondering why we had invested so much in a mediocre meal. The views are stunning and the service is first-rate, so we presume this is predominantly what you pay for at this restaurant.

The bill (for two):
Octopus carpaccio Dhs90
Calamari Dhs90
Salmon fillet Dhs170
Mixed grill Dhs180
Total (excl. service) Dhs530

I went there yesterday for dinner and I have to say it was really nice. The food that chef Michele and her team cooked for us was such delicious and very tasty. I really can recommend 18 degrees to everybody who wants to spend a great day out for dining.

The new menu is just amazing. Food is outstanding and staff is very friendly and helpfull.

We attended the Abu Dhabi Gourmet Festival and just had an amazing dining exepririence. The chefs were present as well and explained their concept of modern gourmet food with an arabic twist. One of the culinary highlights were "Fois gras Kibbeh" and Camel milk icecream with saffron and Chocolate! Only the name sounded already exciting as the food really is.

I loved the restaurant. I dine 3 times a week out in Abu Dhabi, and this place is a hidden gem. The service is impecable and the food is very tasty and well presented. The view is perfect for a nice romantic dinner, and also for a nice lunch as I had with some work colleagues.

My colleague and I had a meeting/lunch at 18 Degrees and what a delightful treat. Not only was the view and ambiance stunning, but the head Chef Michele was so impressive she helped us out with flavourful choice of burratta, loved the calamari and the tenderloin, the warm bread served dips was absolutely delicious and the staff was simply amazing and very attentive. I would strongly recommend this place for a meal, it looked awesome during lunch and can only imagine what it will look like for dinner.

It has the perfect mix of great food, service and an inspiring decor am definitely coming back again.

This is the only Restuarant that I go to when in Abu Dhabi and is probably one of the BEST place to eat and to be seen in within Abu Dhabi. Whether it is for a Romantic or Business Lunch or Dinner, I truly cannot get enough of this place. In fact majority of my local and international business associates insist on having a meeting at 18 Degrees I am a very particular indivdual when it comes to F&B and this outlet meets all my needs. From its Decor, Service, Ambience and ultimately its Food, 18 Degrees is the only place that both me and family (as well as business clients) really enjoy visiting on a regular basis. If you fancy going off menu then don't be afraid to ask at this place.

The Steak tasted absolutely good, however the decor and ambience is pretty average for the price your pay. There are better resturants out there.

In Abu Dhabi we now have a wonderful number of really fine dining venues. All have more to offer than this one - including the view.

Setting: Spectacular
Ambiance: One of the best in the city
Food: Splendid
Presentation: Adequate
Service: Impeccable
Value: Average - setting far more exciting than food
Price: Way out of line unless one considers the priceless view. (Six people - appetizers and four glasses of wine = AED 1,800 - 450 per person.

ADVICE: 1) Do not have the chef select your menu; it will cost you big time and you will be served far too many items.
2) Be sure to ask and order a wine in your price range - the wine was barely OK but not great and cost AED 110 - 120 PER GLASS. Labels on the house wines served could not be read as it was washed off. A Chablis was served at room temperature.

Prepare yourself.

The Management at the new Hyatt did a fantastic job !

We had a fabulous time at the Restaurant... The waiting staff was excellent and very accomandating while not doing "too much", they called the head chef to our table for recommendations. For the wine, a young charming Gentleman recommended us a perfect match with out flavousome food we had. The Codfish mousse was just amazing and the Beef Tenderloin the best i´ve ever tried.
Just the dessert varioation isnt really outstanding, but fantastic in taste and texture... We were invited for a last digestiv on their terrace with a beautiful view.

It was such an enjoyable evening and we´ll be back soon.
Thanks to the Hyatt Management, those guys are a new standard in Abu Dhabi.

Ben
