A trendy celeb favourite from Los Angeles, Koi has the ambience of a nightclub with the superb food and waiting staff of a five-star restaurant. Its dedicated sushi bar, lounge and terrace will easily impress you long before your food even arrives. The high ceilings, chandeliers, bamboo and dimly-lit tables set a distinctly chilled out mood, and its thumping playlist sets the rhythm. The menu is simple with a short selection of thoroughly modern takes on traditional Japanese dishes. If music sets the tone in any restaurant, Koi’s makes you feel like this evening meal is just a prelude to some big night out you may not have planned until you hear that soundtrack. Everything and everybody at Koi seems to move in cadence with the music. The lounge, kitchen and waiting staff barely miss a beat. The Koi experience is a guarantee of exceptional food, faultless service and sophisticated atmosphere.

The decor and service are what you would expect from this class of establishment. The Japanese food was of a good standard but the fusion 'mains' were disappointing for the price. The ambience was appalling. There were five of us but I was unable to hold any conversation with two of my guests because we had to shout at each other to be heard above the blaring 'music'. Three times I asked the staff if they could turn it down a little and although they assured us that they had done so, there was no difference. Apparently the DJ was 'live' - possibly profoundly deaf into the bargain. I will not be returning.
