Vasco’s occupies a special place in the hearts of many who live here. Strange for somewhere that’s stuck in an early-’90s’ time warp; hideous mechanised palms waft ineffectually from the ceiling, a salad bar of the Pizza Hut ilk dominates the room, and – gastronomists look away now – there’s a theme: our circumnavigating friend, Vasco da Gama. And yet it is packed, night after night, for several reasons: first of all, the food is, without fail, excellent.
Presumably following in the footsteps (or thereabouts) of the eponymous explorer, the menu seems like a confused medley at first, with a mix of fish, steak, pizza, pasta and curries,
