The nervous beginner, wandering the streets of our capital for the first time, may be forgiven for thinking he has stumbled onto a real steakhouse when he sees the six-foot high, red neon twinkling lights of the Rainbow Steakhouse. Inside, though, all will be revealed. For this is an Indian and Chinese buffet restaurant.

The buffet is a mere Dhs54 and offers a vast range of mezze, salads and hot entrees. It’s worth digging out an extra Dhs4 for the various hot breads, as the doughy offerings on the buffet are tired and lifeless. Stand-outs of the buffet mains are the murg mulai, which has tender pieces of chicken and is not too spicy, and the chicken escalope and lemon fish are both quite tasty. As for the steaks… well, they have eight types and they all cost Dhs45, which should in itself be a warning. Best to stick with the buffet.

The service is polite and watchful, and the music restrained. This is more than can be said of the wild pink and burgundy decor with matching cathedral-like chairs.

Overall, this is a curate’s egg of a place; while the whole may be somewhat stale and addled, it would be unfair not to acknowledge the merits of some of its parts.

The restaurant is fine. the food it provides is very good according to the price it charges. Many varieties included, but some food in not well-cooked sometimes. I like that they have private rooms, but i think they should make a section for smoking! All in all, this is a "finë"' restaurant
