Admire the white flesh of the shellfish and catch the glint of freshness in the clear eyes of the hammour, and you’ll have no doubt that the best of the morning’s catch is on offer at Fishmarket.
Start with the tom yam koong, which comes with two mammoth prawns and a seriously fiery kick. It’s best to order simple main courses – try the grilled red snapper with sweet chilli sauce, which is tender, juicy and cased in deliciously crispy skin. It comes with a portion of rice that could feed the combined cast of The Little Mermaid and Shark Tale twice over.
If you’re on a budget, be careful: your piscine choices from the ice are priced according to weight, and a few jumbo prawns can inflict some serious fiscal damage. Things can get very expensive for such a simple meal, but the surroundings are pleasant, with rope-bound bamboo pillars, sailor-blue tablecloths and lobster-filled fish tanks giving Fishmarket that rustic seaside shack feel.
