You go to the Rock Bottom Café with friends to drink beer, eat stodgy food, listen to live music from the house band and watch football on one of the many televisions. Expect nothing else and you’ll have a good evening.

There are comfortable booths in addition to commodious bar stools to accommodate amply-girthed Brits and Americans. The walls are adorned with bric-a-brac that Jack Kerouac may well have discarded while on the road, and the bar is large – well, large enough to accommodate an abandoned motorcycle anyway.

The menu is extensive, and in places over-optimistic: do people really drop in for lobster thermidor? But stick to the usuals and Dhs26 will get you a portion of cheese and bean nachos large enough to share with the rest of the bar. For a full dinner, you’ll get two large pieces of fish in a crisp batter and plenty of chips for Dhs49. There are also steaks: the filet mignon is quite good, and comes loaded with potatoes and mushrooms.

This is not the destination for a quiet rendezvous with someone you want to get to know better. Once the house band, Déjà Vu, starts up, conversation becomes difficult, and the DJ is just as loud. If you want to get your own back, or you are just looking for a quick way to end your date, try Friday’s karaoke night.
