Style wise, with its brown and cream stripes on the outside walls, there’s nothing like Resto in Abu Dhabi. However, the hotel it’s sat in is more inconspicuous, and therefore very hard to find.
The buffet here is heavy on salads, particularly of the Lebanese variety, and these are all quite good. The stuffed vine leaves are piquant and tangy; the mutabbal rich and tasty; the smoked salmon delightfully pink. Breads are soft and fresh and the cheese selection is pleasingly extensive.
However, the hot dishes are a different story. The grilled meats are dull and lifeless, and the vegetables often cooked several hours ago. Irish stew, spinach chicken curry and spaghetti carbonara are quite poor. The problem is, with the lack of passing trade, the hot dishes sit for hours untouched.
Puddings come in a variety of vivid rainbow hues and, as happy as they look, they taste uniformly bland and sweet. In addition to the standard buffet there is an a la carte menu, but there’s nothing of interest there that isn’t available from the hot plates.
Service is good, although sometimes the waiters are over eager, whisking away food before you’ve finished it. When we visited we couldn’t have an alcoholic drink to make the bad bits of the experience matter a whole lot less, but the restaurant has applied for a licence.
Resto is sleek, modern and well-designed, but ultimately it’s just a regular buffet in a city that is full of them. And it’s not worth going out of your way for one more.By Time Out Abu Dhabi staff
