While most wasabi found outside Japan these days is an artificial creation of horseradish, mustard and green food colouring, this restaurant is as close to the real thing as you’ll find outside Tokyo.

From the clean-cut decor and modern lines, to the booths with sliding doors and slippers for customers so they can leave their shoes in the hallway, this tiny restaurant offers an originality and flair that most five-star establishments can’t match.

At this Izakaya-style restaurant the best way to experience the food is to order several dishes, or one of the combo ‘boats’ ideal for sharing, so everyone in the party can enjoy the wide range of tastes. In addition, there is a large selection of beef, chicken and pork dishes, together with seafood and noodles. The large shrimp spring rolls on a bed of fried rice are particularly good.

Service is excellent, that is once you get past the Lost in Translation experience of wondering just what the small device sitting in the middle of the table is: what looks like an electronic car key is actually used to summon the waiter.

The sushi here is by far the best in Abu Dhabi, and probably tops anything found across the UAE. Based purely on taste, Wasabi is excellent, but the authenticity of the experience makes it a thoroughly commendable place to eat.

My wife and I had what was probably the best Japanese food experience of our lives at the Wasabi. The food is most definitely a cut above the competition's and the service, while not stellar, was certainly adequate enough. Each table has a pager for summoning your server.

However, the location is horrific: good luck getting there and then finding a place to park. We eventually had no choice but to use the neighboring Sheraton's valet parking service and then hike over in the heat.

We'll go back when the weather is cooler or when all the surrounding construction work is finally finished.

So after reading the good reviews, we decide to try Wasabi for a birthday dinner. Worst dining experience in Abu Dhabi thus far. We waited (and waited, and waited) for an hour for miso soups that never appeared, spring rolls that were apparently a figment of our imaginations and only got two of the four suhi rolls that we ordered. Don't bother, run down location in the middle of horrible construction with marginal and expensive sushi. For these prices and a MUCH better experience, head to their sister location, Toki, in the Hilton hotel.

Been to a lot of Sushi places around the world (but not in Japan) and I give this place my Thumbs up when it comes to Abu Dhabi; Dubai definitely has many more restaurants but this ones really cosy and the staff are really friendly and knowledgeable about the different dishes. However for some of you who dont like Mayo in your sushi, be sure to ask....

I just want to back up the review. I ate there last night and this place is great. It's always a good sign when there are loads of Japanese people eating there when you walk in. Very nice, very Japanese, and excellent Sushi. The menu has plenty of other Japanese dishes for those who aren't into it but like Asian food. I thought it was terrific value, especially for Ab Dab.

If you are in town and want to get your Sushi on don't miss it. One note is that it is a bit hard to get to at the moment because of the road construction. You can't actually see it from the street but don't let that stop you.
