A real gem in Souk Qaryat Al Beri, Left Bank is straight out of a 1960s sci-fi flick – that is, if silver screen spaceships were massive, lush and had smooth trip hop playing in the background. Neon glows, hanging beads, leather chairs and a fantastic outdoor dining area make Left Bank one of the most inviting club eateries in the city. And the food? Read on. It took us less than a second to choose a table on the balcony; and between the now beautiful evening weather and the breeze coming in over the water, we’d strongly suggest you do the same if you visit. The waiters were as subdued as the atmosphere: softly spoken, non-invasive but very attentive, and for the most part we were left to enjoy the view and each other’s company.
Left Bank’s food menu is a strange affair, but not in a bad way. It’s split into small bites, steaks, salads, side dishes and classics, so you’re just as likely to find fish ’n’ chips as you are ravioli. We ordered the rump steak (bigger, cheaper, and we’re greedy) with a blue cheese dip and a side of cauliflower cheese; our dining partner had ravioli, and a creative feta salad.
The steak was tender, despite us opting out of the pricier fillet cuts, and the blue cheese dip so delicately flavoured we could have drunk it from the bowl. The cauliflower came in a miniature wrought iron pot, and was swimming in a creamy cheese sauce that could have used a bit more kick, but was by no means bad.
The ravioli was a winner, and came in a creamy sauce with sage, artichoke and roasted red peppers that burst with incredible flavour. The salad was a creative blend of feta, avocado and watermelon, but compared to the exceptional quality of the mains was underwhelming. One saving grace was the great feta though; far too many places throw in cheap white cheese and hope for the best.
But it was the small touches that really made the meal shine, such as the grilled shiitake that accompanied our steak that might have been the best mushroom we’d ever tasted. There’s a reason Left Bank made it to our bar food shortlist this year: a great menu, restaurant quality food, and one on the best views around. The prices aren’t bad either.
