There aren’t any signs on Najda Street for Qian Zhou Hotpot – but a row of red lanterns in the second floor window lets you know where the restaurant is. Which is inside a very grim building indeed, but if you muster the courage to make it as far as the restaurant you’ll be rewarded with an entertaining and unique Chinese dining experience. The restaurant only serves hotpot, which involves choosing your own broth then cooking a selection of raw, pre-prepared vegetables, meat, seafood and noodles by yourself at the table. A mini buffet of condiments ranging from MSG to peanut sauce are the focal point of the restaurant, which is otherwise plainly decorated. The atmosphere is warm and bustling and often packed with customers from the motherland - a very good sign indeed. But be warned - hardly any English is spoken, so you’ll probably have to make do with pointing at the menu.

I thought this place was great. A simple concept with a variety of choices. I had the spicy broth base with amazingly fresh oyster mushrooms, bamboo shoots (the real deal - nothing from a can), tofu skin, noodles, and cabbage. The waiter whipped up a sauce for me that proved to be quite delicious. Lots of condiments and toppings to choose from. I also thought it was very affordable.
