Japanese food and a dash of theatre make this a great destination for families Reviews

If you own a Justin Bieber lunchbox and think the Burj Khalifa might be a spaceship, chances are this Japanese-American teppanyaki joint is already your favourite restaurant in the city. Old or under 12, though you’ll need to book well in advance, a spot by the grill doubles as a front-row seat to a unique food-based theatre show, with perma-chuckling chefs juggling spatulas, catapulting shrimps and sending chunks of vegetables soaring through the air, all to the delight of a family-heavy crowd. Inevitably, though, the performance outshines the food.

Given that each show lasts a good 20 minutes, your options are to either gobble each component separately as it’s somersaulted into your serving dish, or keep your chopsticks holstered until the action stops and the dish is assembled, by which time you’ll be lucky if the whole thing’s even lukewarm. Still, with a good selection of noodle dishes and sushi to investigate, there’s plenty to Benihana besides the entertainment. But if you’re a businessman looking to talk numbers or a lover with some wooing to do, you’re best off sticking to the peripheries, else you could end up with egg on your face. Quite literally.

Another great night at Benihana’s. Love the teppanyaki, this is not just a meal but an experience where the chef ensures everyone leaves having had a great time.
We found the food, atmosphere, ambience and price all good. Can’t wait for our next night out here.
