Impeccable, inventive fine-dining, cruelly stuffed inside a nightclub Reviews

It’s a restaurant of two halves, is Étoiles. In the cooler months, the breezy, stone-pillared balcony that overlooks the rear courtyard of Emirates Palace is one of the most idyllic dining spots in the city. As soon as things heat up, however, your only option is a drab dining room which (since the venue also doubles as one of the city’s chicest nightclubs) comes laced with cheap-looking glittery bits and the smell of stale smoke. It’s a shame, really, because the food at Étoiles is absolutely superb. The menu is packed with exciting surprises that look and taste every bit as good as they sound; plates of calamari with candied peanuts and chocolate cannelloni in minty foam being particular highlights. If only they’d rip out the DJ booth and focus on the food full-time, Étoiles could very quickly find itself among the ranks of the best restaurants in the city.

Question: which 6 star hotel restaurant in the world greets you with the question "which coupon are you using tonight?" Yes, it seems Etoiles has descended to the farce of a well-known 1970s British holiday camp.....
And it got worse. Many wines on the wine list were marked as not available; when we ordered one that was "available" it turned out not to be. The "fresh Australian mackerel" was inedible, soggy and rubbery - definitely not fresh - and had to be returned; strangely, Etoiles did not even try to replace it, confirming our suspicions - but they still tried to charge us for the full meal, at the end. The other meal we had was fine but nothing to get excited about; the sort of thing one cooks at home, any night of the week.
We were lucky enough to have a table outside on the balcony, with corresponding views; but a cool wind was blowing, so we asked for a heater to be brought. We had to ask no less than 3 times; and then it only lasted 30 mins before running out of gas, with no offer to replace it.
To cap it all, when the bill came, there was no reduction, or any attempt to make up for a very poor experience. After some discussion, the aforementioned fish was removed from the bill! Generous. Ha!
In conclusion, Emirates Palace is living in the past; Abu Dhabi now has so many outstanding restaurants, with exceptional service and amazing food, diners do not need to put up with the likes of Etoiles. Go to Jumeirah and see what I mean!
