If you go to Soba, keep your eyes on your plate, order only sushi and sashimi, and you’ll come away satisfied. Their sushi chef is a real pro and serves up beautifully prepared rolls, ultra-fresh fish and all sorts of other Japanese treats with flair. Go for the reasonably priced platters and we can guarantee you’ll be a happy customer. The rest of the menu, which strays into Malaysian, Thai and Chinese dishes is far less successful, with often badly judged spices and ingredients spoiling the curries and stir-fries. The uniformly beige decor gives the impression that the dining room wasn’t decorated so much as hurriedly filled with cheap furniture, while the layout is awkward and uncomfortable. As for the service, it’s cheerful but irritating slapdash – plates will be unceremoniously plonked in front of you and don’t expect apologies for the inevitable mistakes or delays.

Bland food. Terrible environment. May have been ok 5 years ago but shows no signs of change. Rolls were ice cold, made who knows when.

Soba seems very much an afterthought at Le Royal Meridien (which isn't exactly a foodie's paradise to start with). The cramped space off a lobby corridor is uninviting; the place seems tired and generally second-rate.

The "open sushi session" is actually repeated small plates of the same two or three nigiri and simple roll, along wth salty miso and a limp salad, accompanied by a fairly low grade sake.

Once upon a time, when it was one of only one or two other sushi joints in town, Soba might have seemed like an okay place. With the variety and quality the capital offers these days, I think it's purely for transient hotel guests who don't know any better...

The Best Japanese food we have ever had. We enjoyed ourselves and the food was excellant what more can you ask for!
