Pleasantly surprising steak joint with a 60s twist Reviews

As we entered 18 Oz, any steakhouse clichés we may have had were knocked on the head by the 1960s’ hotel lounge chic that greeted us. The tidy, minimalist, modestly sized dining space held a misty atmosphere, which breathed a concoction of cinnamon, furniture polish, parmesan and honeysuckles as the host beamed a white smile over a black bowtie. We were lead to a hidden, dimly lit snug by a parade of smartly dressed waiters and a soft-spoken waitress brandished what looked like a centurion’s shield; a torso-sized plaque cut in the shape of those ‘genuine leather’ tags on new shoes: ‘The menu, sir.’ This was, after all, a steakhouse boasting two Texas-sized 18 ouncers, with menus the size of the state to match: a playfully loud touché to the decor’s clean, defined lines.

18 Oz offers an assortment of appetisers and mains, with steak only about half of the restaurant’s repertoire. Beginning with the Caesar salad topped with king crab we found it to be a pleasant surprise. In fact, dare we say it, it was one of the best Caesars we’ve had in Abu Dhabi. And different. It was leafy and uncomplicated, lightly drizzled with a cheesy sauce and sprinkled with tiny bits of crispy beef bacon. Atop lay grilled king crab legs, opened and lightly peppered. A delightful revamp of a classic steakhouse starter. The unusual combo of fleshy prawn, mashed avocado, and crunchy radish strings in another starter left a rich impression on the palate. However, the lonely, cold mini-baguette on the side was well on its way to becoming a breadstick torpedo.

The staff-recommended 18oz ‘cowboy steak’ seemed like an appropriate choice for main. The medium-well buckaroo arrived with a posse of creamed potatoes and tossed spinach (there are plenty of sides to choose from). The first bite of the salt-and-peppered steak was succulent. A few more juicy bites, though, and we hit a wall of fat. And then another. A cover of a Dido song had finished by the fourth mouthful of grease. The cowboy half gone, we wondered how many of the 18 ounces were actually steak.

Then came the tenderloin, which looked like tenderloin but tasted more like a hunk of Sunday roast, and not as flavourful as the cowboy. My date had to resort to using two sauces to spice things up – chilli and barbecue – however, these sauces were merely ketchupy rehashes of everyday condiments.

With no room for dessert, we asked for the bill. To our disappointment it came in a boring, conventional bill folder – but at least it wasn’t the size of Texas.

The bill (for two)
1x Caesar salad Dhs34

Total (incl 16 per cent) Dhs619.44

I had my birthday dinner at 18 oz on Thursday night. I ordered the 10 oz tenderloin. My steak was cooked to perfection. I loved all the dipping sauce options. Herb butter was my favorite. The service was also outstanding. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive. I loved the holiday decor and music. My husband and I are looking forward to eating there again in the near future. We highly recommend eating at 18 oz.

This restaurant is a very good option in town. Steaks are good, they have a good service and environment. The wine list has good prices. Strongly recommended.

This is a great steakhouse food wise. I was not super impressed with the interior design, nevertheless, the steaks on offer are great and the meat tastes excellent. Your order comes with two sides, although on the small side. You also get two choices of homemade sauces to go with the steaks. I and my wife ordered 4 different sauces to try and frankly, we thought all of them tasted the same. The restaurant is small and its layout is a little weird. The lighting was romantic and the service good.

Awesome.
Best value for money in that category. I used to go to one of their competitor on a regular basis but have now moved to 18 oz as I really enjoy their steak and the wine prices are very reasonable which is a big plus when you want to enjoy a nice bottle with your tenderloin.

We went to this restaurant by accident as we got turned around on the Salam St in trying to get to the Rotana Hotel. The decor was lovely and we appreciated the little Easter touches. We ordered the Avocado appetizer which was nice in lieu of a salad. Very fresh and something different! We all ordered steaks for our entree and they were generous in their sizing and the taste of all of them was enjoyable.

Wines were moderately priced and enjoyed. Desserts we shared a lovely Italian one.....

One negative...we ordered a steak to go and did not check but the next evening when we opened it were surprised to find only the meat in the take away...none of the nice potatoe choices or a vegetable (again a very nice bouquet of choices) were included...
