The first thing you might wonder upon sitting down at Asha’s is just who the titular restaurateur is. This is shortly answered by a narcissistic array of glamorous pics of the Bollywood singer turned professional gourmand Asha Bhasle that adorn every surface, from the walls to the menu. The lush interior is typical of a chain restaurant, lacking any sense of spontaneity, with the feel that every satin pillow was placed with scientific precision. Still, it can’t be faulted for effort and the staff are quick to deliver fresh trays of roasted and fried poppadoms and dips. The food is consistently good too. It may not be the top of the pile just yet, but shortly after opening it has already established a loyal clientele.
The nizami shorba, a soup of chicken, lentils and apple, is one of the picks on a menu big on comfort, while other dishes such as the hare baingan ka bartha, a mixture of smoky mashed aubergine flecked with seeds and fresh green chilli really hit the spot when scooped up with scraps of warm chapatti. The mall setting of Asha’s may make dining here less of an occasion, but it’s a definite contender in a city which has vastly improved the quality of its Indian restaurants in the past year.
